Assessing shoes (pumps): should you buy a pair when they are on sale?

These beautiful patent leather pumps with a solid but high heel were on sale at a big discount more than six years ago. The size 39 1/2 pinches the toes of my size 40-feet. I cannot walk for a long time.

I bought them because they are gorgeous. But since I wear them about once a year, were they a good buy? Or did buying them begin the difficult process of not being more shoes on sale? Then there are stilettos bought and never worn outside of the house.
