Go into your closet and start with something you love that is appropriate for the event or your mood. Here, I start with black suede pants from Joie (always buy on sale in the store, online, or at the outlet). Add favorite belt — this one here I paid full price but the width and texture is perfect (sold at Pearls in San Marino). Cold weather? Lined Malloni black boots — pretty, comfortable, good heel with sass.

Add short velvet sleeveless top for layering and to show off belt and pants.

Add cardigan — my fave is a lightweight all-season Valentino.

Add leather jacket, purse, silk scarve.
